Alpha ChannelThe Alpha Channel is the set of values ("Alpha Values") that specify the transparency of each item (usually pixel) in the RGBA color model.
In the most RGB and RGBA systems a color depth of 24 or 32 bits per pixel is used. In these systems, 8 bits is used to represent the Alpha Channel value, allowing a range of 0 to 255.
Please note: Although usually thought of as indicating degree of transparency, many systems, including the popular PNG file format actually use the Alpha Channel to store the degree of opacity of each item/pixel. Opacity is simply the inverse of transparency (e.g. 100% opacity is 0% transparency, and 0% opacity is 100% transparency).
