    How To Prevent Image Copying

    Chapter 5: Watermarks

If you read the tutorial so far, you'll know that you can't use technical means to absolutely ensure that nobody copies your web site images.

However, there are two additional steps that you can consider:
    1. In many countries, including the United States of America, you may be able to register copyright on either your web site images, or on your entire web site. This may increase your legal options if somebody does make unauthorized copies of your images.

For further research, you may find the web site of the United States Copyright Office useful.

In any case, we suggest you discuss this matter with your attorney.

    2. You could consider watermarking your images. This is basically adding (usually with the help of special software) visible or non-visible information to your images which allows them to be identified as yours.

Watermarks can act as a deterrent to would be copiers. Additionally, it is possible that they might potentially help you in proving that images on another site have been copied from your web site.

Of course, if you hope to prove copying or copyright infringement in a legal case or context, you should discuss all aspects of this (including any possible/potential use of watermarks as evidence) with your attorney.
