    How To Display Banners

    Chapter 3: Using Server-Side Scripts

The final way to display banners on your web site is to use server-side scripts (ASP, CGI or PHP.

This is the type of solution that all the big-name sites use for their banner displays - but the nice thing is there are plenty of affordable scripts that can do the job to.

To use one of these scripts, you will need a web host that meets the requirements of the script.

As there are many scripts that you could choose from, I'll have to talk in general terms about the types of facilities they typically offer. For specific details on any particular script, check the script developers' web sites (here's a list of suitable Banner Rotation Scripts).

Anyway let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of doing things this way:

    Advantages:
    • Works on all browsers.

    • Easily to update: You can add and remove banners at will through an admin-screen.

    • The banner(s) shown on your pages can rotate: if a visitor returns to a page, you can show a different banner each time.

    • Detailed Tracking: You can see exactly how many times each banner has been displayed and clicked.

    • You can setup "zones": Most scripts allow you to have different groups of banners in rotation in different areas ("zones") of your web site. For example, if some pages of your site relate to (say) Dogs, and other pages relate to (say) Cats, you can have a different selection of banners in the Dog and Cat sections of your site.

    • Many scripts also allow you to set limits on the number of times any particular banner is displayed, allowed to be clicked before being removed from the rotation, or a date/time limit. These are all handy features if you are trying to make money by selling advertising.

    • Many scripts also allow you to weight different banners so that ones that are more important to you can be displayed more often.
    Disadvantages:
    • You need a web host compatible with the particular script that you choose.

In short, there really are no significant disadvantages (providing you can find a script compatible with your web host) to using server-side script for banner display...

...So it's time to start looking for a suitable script: I suggest you start your search with this list of Banner Rotation Scripts.
