HPGL File Format
The initial version of the format, known simply as "HP/GL", consisted of a series of commands encoded as plain human-readable (albeit cryptic) ASCII text. The commands gave setup information for the plotter and drawing instructions, telling the plotter to draw lines, arcs or text, etc., at various positions on the page. Maximum resolution was limited to 1/40th of a millimeter (1016 DPI). One oddity is that there were however no commands for setting line widths, since these were determined by the particular pens loaded into the plotter. Hewlett-Packard did eventually revise the language in a backward compatible way ("HP/GL2&"), but adding several additional new features including:
